The answer, unfortunately, is no.  A recent independent study shows the average response time of the police is eleven minutes.  The BEST response time, including if you live next door to the station, is seven minutes.  The FBI says violent crimes occur within a five minute time frame, start to finish.  So let’s see how this plays out:

And that’s the BEST case scenario!  Of course, it takes time for them to figure out who is who and to evaluate the situation, and to enter the premises, before calling anyone - probably another 4 minutes.  God bless the police, but they are simply not capable of effectively protecting you from someone who intends to do you harm.  YOU must take responsibility for your own safety in the event someone wants to do you harm.  his is simply a practical matter and not one of opinion, politics, or morality. If you want to be safe, take charge!

What can you do to protect yourself?  First, avoid placing yourself in an environment where you are at risk.  Don’t go to places where violence is known to happen.  Be aware of your surroundings.  Prepare and practice your response to an assailant.  If your gut warns you something is amiss LISTEN AND ACT ACCORDINGLY.  Prepare, prepare, prepare.  Evaluate what tools you can bring to bear should you be attacked.  That includes non-lethal and lethal tools - and a firearm is nothing more or less than a tool.  A firearm is NOT right for everyone.

If you are unwilling or unable to practice, practice, practice with your firearm, including unholstering, loading and unloading, clearing jams, and employing your firearm from different positions, then a firearm is NOT for you!  Carrying a firearm CAN be an effective tool for ensuring your safety or it can be a foolish way to get yourself shot with your own firearm.  A tool is only as effective as the ability of the user to wield it.  If you are willing to invest yourself in preparing to use this tool for self protection, then by all means, come see me and we’ll find the best firearm for your own protection and the protection of those around you.
