So how DO you make your rifle shoot “flatter?” The short and accurate answer is it’s physically IMPOSSIBLE! We need to consider “external ballistics” of firing. Once a bullet leaves the barrel of EVERY firearm, gravity starts pulling it towards the center of the earth - down.In fact, to compensate for this, when you zero your sights/optics, you are not actually pointing directly at the target.Instead you are “aiming” above the target. The further away the target is you are zeroing to, the higher your actual point of aim. Here’s what we CAN do:
We can use a bullet with a lower BC (Ballistic Coefficient). The BC is an industry standard comparative measurement that indicates how likely the bullet will fly straight longer and how easily it slips through the air. At some point in a bullet’s travel it will become unstable and start to tumble. Lower BC bullets stay true longer in flight than higher BC bullets.
We can use a lower weight bullet. As the weight of the bullet goes down the speed of the bullet goes up, so though gravity is still pulling it down, the bullet has traveled further. However, it isn’t all sunshine and roses. There is a breaking point where the bullet weighs so little it can’t effectively slice through the air, and where wind will blow the bullet off course (left or right to point of aim).
